What changes the price
- The job. Opening a door is quicker than making a new car key from scratch.
- Lock type. Standard residential locks cost less to work on than high-security or commercial hardware.
- Key type. A basic metal key costs less than a transponder, laser-cut or smart proximity key.
- Vehicle make, model and year, for car keys and fobs.
- Urgency and distance. A same-day visit or a trip to the edge of the area can add to the cost.
What a fair quote includes
Ask for the total: the service-call or trip fee, labor and any parts. If the locksmith finds something different on site, like a damaged lock that needs replacing, they should explain it and get your OK before doing anything extra.
