What counts as a locksmith emergency
An emergency is anything that leaves you unable to get in, unable to lock up, or unsure whether your door is secure. Some are obvious, like standing on the porch with your keys on the kitchen counter. Others are quieter, like a deadbolt that suddenly won’t turn just as you’re leaving for work.
When you reach us with one of these problems during our hours, we treat it as urgent and try to connect you with a licensed locksmith who can come out as soon as possible. The locksmith’s goal is usually to get you inside or get the door locking properly before they leave, even if a longer-term upgrade makes sense later.

Broken keys and locks that stop working
A key that snaps in the cylinder is usually a worn key meeting a stiff lock. Resist the urge to use superglue or a pocketknife; that tends to push the fragment deeper or jam the pins. A locksmith uses thin extraction tools that hook the key’s cuts and slide it back out, often leaving the lock fully usable.
When a lock stops working, the cause is often mechanical and fixable on the spot: a broken tailpiece, a bolt that has dropped out of alignment with the strike, or a worn cam. If the lock is beyond repair, a locksmith can often swap the cylinder or install a new deadbolt the same visit, and cut matching keys so your other doors still work with one key.
Securing your door after a break-in
If someone forced your door, call the police first and let them document the scene. Once they’re done, a locksmith can usually make the opening secure again so you’re not leaving it propped shut with a chair.
Forced entries usually split the jamb around the strike plate rather than defeating the lock itself. A locksmith typically replaces damaged cylinders and deadbolts, installs a reinforced strike plate with long screws that bite into the wall framing, and rekeys any locks if keys may have been taken. If the frame is too badly split to hold a lock, a good locksmith will secure the opening temporarily and tell you plainly that a carpenter or door installer should finish the job.

Drilling is a last resort, and a reputable locksmith will tell you before drilling and what it costs to replace the lock afterward. You pay the locksmith directly.

Will the locksmith have to drill my lock?
Usually not. Most residential and automotive locks can be picked or bypassed without damage. If a lock is high-security or broken internally, the locksmith should explain why drilling is needed and quote the replacement before starting.
What should I do if a key breaks off in my lock?
Stop turning it and don’t try glue or tweezers. Leave the fragment in place and call; a locksmith can usually extract it quickly and often save the lock.
Do I need to show ID?
Yes. Before opening a home, business or vehicle, the locksmith confirms you have the right to access it. If your ID is locked inside, they can check it once the door is open.
